ASTM/ASME · ASTM A516/A516M (ASME SA-516)
Family of fine-grain, killed carbon steel plates used to fabricate pressure vessels, boilers, separators and petrochemical equipment operating at moderate temperature (generally -30°C to roughly 400-500°C depending on grade). It's the most common plate family in industrial boilermaking, offering an excellent strength/weldability balance.

Note: The family's historical reference grade; the maximum allowable carbon actually varies with plate thickness (up to roughly 0.30-0.31% for heavy gauges per ASTM A20/A516). Steelmaker SSAB offers a tighter commercial composition (P max 0.020%, S max 0.010%) than the ASTM minimum. The 21% minimum elongation is measured on a 50 mm (2 in) gauge length; the standard also allows 17% on a 200 mm (8 in) gauge length. Can be supplied normalized with an optional Charpy test (Supplementary Requirement S5) for low-temperature use down to roughly -29°C to -46°C depending on the purchaser's requirements.
