Austenitic-ferritic (duplex) chromium-nickel-molybdenum-nitrogen stainless steel, the most widely used grade in the duplex family. Extensively used in offshore oil & gas piping and flanges for its resistance to pitting and stress-corrosion cracking in seawater/chloride environments, with a yield strength roughly double that of standard austenitic stainless steels (304/316). Not recommended above 300°C (embrittlement) or below -50°C (ductile-to-brittle transition).

Note: Designation confirmed by cross-referencing (an Atlas Specialty Metals data sheet plus Japanese/Chinese distributor data sheets) as the JIS equivalent of duplex 2205 (S31803/1.4462). Slightly wider Cr window (21-24% vs. 21-23% ASTM/EN) and somewhat more permissive P/S tolerances. No distinct JIS designation for the specific forged form (a "SUSF"-type prefix) could be confirmed from a free public source; SUS329J3L is the designation generally cited by suppliers for all wrought products including flanges/forgings, which is consistent with the fact that JIS does not always distinguish forged/bar/plate with a different prefix for this grade in commercial data sheets.
