JIS · JIS G3101:2020

Family of unalloyed carbon structural steels used in steel framing, locksmithing/metalwork and light boilermaking for applications without high-strength requirements. It's the most common and cheapest grade on the market, available in nearly every region of the world under closely related designations.

Note: The most widely used general structural grade in Japan (a near-direct equivalent of S235JR/A36). JIS G3101 does not officially set a carbon/manganese ceiling for SS400 (only P and S are specified) — the C and Mn values shown here are typical practical values observed at steel mills, not strict contractual limits. Yield strength of 245 MPa for thickness ≤16 mm, dropping to 205 MPa beyond 100 mm. Minimum elongation varies with thickness (17-23%).

Values compiled from public sources for guidance only — always verify against the official standard before use in design or fabrication.
