ASTM · ASTM A240 / A276
The 304/304L family groups the world's most widely used chromium-nickel (18/8) austenitic stainless grades, valued for their good balance of corrosion resistance, formability, weldability and cost. Found in appliances, food service, food processing, architecture and piping in low-chloride environments. The low-carbon 304L variant improves intergranular corrosion resistance after welding, at the cost of a slightly lower minimum mechanical strength.

Note: Low-carbon version (C≤0.03%) with a widened nickel range (8-12% vs. 8-10.5% for standard 304) to partly offset the strength loss from reduced carbon.
